Panel at Varmere Våtere Villere: Is this petroganda?

Skrevet 14. februar 2025

Expert panel to discuss how fossil fuel advertising, sponsorships and PR delay and obstruct climate action.

What is climate misinformation and what can we do to counter it?

IS THIS PETROGANDA?

What: Panel at the climate festival Varmere Våtere Villere.
When: Friday March 14th 2025
Time: 15.00
Where: Skiftet Bar, Det Norske Teateret, Bergen

What is climate misinformation and what can we do to counter it?

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on governments to ban fossil fuel advertising and warned creative agencies to stop working for the fossil fuel industry.

Guterres' advice was based on research and investigations into how fossil fuel advertising, sponsorships and PR-activities have been used to obstruct and delay climate action, control the climate debate and mislead the public, politicians and stakeholders.

Klimakultur has invited an expert panel to discuss which role the marketing, advertising and PR industries play in building and maintaining the social license of the fossil fuel industry.

What can we do to secure open and well informed climate conversations - and how does the Norwegian debate about climate misinformation relate to the conversations being had internationally?

Participants:

Anja Bakken Riise, Framtiden i Våre Hender
Dickon Bonvik-Stone, Communicating Climate Change
Ellen Ormesher, reporter for Desmog
Ketan Joshi, writer, analyst and communication consultant

Information about the panel:

Anja Bakken Riise is the outgoing leader for Framtiden i Våre Hender. FIVH is among Norway's largest environmental organisations with nearly 50.000 members. At the organisation's annual meeting in 2024 it was unanimously decided to support and advocate for a ban on fossil fuel advertising.

Dickon Bonvik-Stone is the host of the Communicating Climate Change  podcast which aims to engage, empower, and activate audiences on climate-related issues. Oslo-based Dickon mentors startups in the ocean and climate space, supports international organisations like the UNCC and Creatives for Climate in climate communications capacity building and is passionate about providing access to knowledge on how to better communicate climate change.

Ellen Ormesher is an award-winning Scottish journalist with interests across climate, culture, and industry. At the international climate news outlet, DeSmog, she reports on climate accountability in advertising and PR. She was previously a Senior Reporter covering sustainability at The Drum, Europe's largest trade publication for the marketing industries. Her work has also been featured in The Guardian. Ellen is currently pursuing an MsC in Environment and Development Studies at the University of Edinburgh.

Ketan Joshi is a writer, analyst and communications consultant focusing on clean energy and climate change. He previously worked in climate and energy for private companies and government agencies, and now writes journalism and commentary from the front lines of climate and energy battles around the world. Ketan is based in Oslo and consults organisations addressing the climate crisis.

Admittance with day pass Friday, festival pass or event ticket.

Presented by Klimakultur. This session will be in English.

More information on petroganda: In the report "What is Norwegian energy culture" (2024) Klimakultur presented a range of perspectives on Norway, energy and culture. The report also includes the historic background on fossile fuel advertising, sponsorships and marketing through culture, sports and educational programs (like Equinor's Kodekraft-program).
